Description

The Forest Indigo is one of the most beautiful of our small understorey shrubs that does best in frost –free gardens. The tiny white pea-like flowers, so typical of this species, spangle the tree like newly fallen snowflakes from mid-summer through autumn, and intermittently through the year. Leaves on each branch are carried on the same plane, creating a layered effect, with the tips of the thin, flexible branches drooping softly. As the flowering season wanes, fallen petals cover the ground below like confetti – the prettiest sight. Group a few together for striking effect - as the focal point on a shaded patio, alongside a path, or in a shady spot alongside a small water feature. Beneath a small group of the pink flowering River Indigo, I. jucunda is a perfect position for the Forest Indigo creating a beautiful simultaneous display. Add the Plectranthus shrubs P. zuluensis, P. fruticosus or P. Mona Lavender; the large, darker green leaves enhance the ethereal quality of this indigo. Position the silver-green leaves and white flowers of the ground hugging P. oertendahlii at its feet. This small grouping will provide autumn food for birds, butterflies and other insects. Other companion plants are the summer flowering bulb, Scadoxus multiflorous, and winter flowering groundcover Crassula multicava. Indigofera micrantha enjoys areas of moderate to high rainfall. Plant beneath an evergreen canopy or close to a north-facing wall to protect from frost.
