Erythrina zeyheri (Ploughbreaker), is a dwarf shrublet with large round leaves and beautiful scarlet red flowers in late spring to summer (October to January). It occurs naturally in moist vlei areas and clay soils, and in damp grasslands. It is a very rewarding accent plant assuming that there is ample space for the large rootstock as most of the plant grows underground. Above ground, the Ploughbreaker grows no more than 30 – 60 cm in height. In the garden, it looks best planted close to the edge of a pond. The shrublet is deciduous and can withstand the extreme cold of the Highveld winter. Flowers are pollinated by insects and sunbirds.
