THICKET
Summer / Winter rainfall region
Eastern Cape, parts of southern and southwestern Cape and Klein Karoo. Known as Albany Thicket. This region butts up against the Fynbos, Succulent Karoo and Subtropical EC vegetation regions so there is an overlap of plant species. Spiny plants and shrubby bushes are common with scattered trees. Soils are fertile and plants are adapted to browsers and low rainfall and are hardy and easy to grow. Rain can be any time of year with the eastern section receiving summer rains, and the western half, winter rains. Less than 500mm/ annumPlants are drought and heat tolerant. This category is for gardeners keen to use locally indigenous plants, i.e. their region, rather than plants indigenous to anywhere in SA.
